NJ Transit Metro North Fare Changes
Release Date: March 09, 2017
Please note that on March 19, 2017, a change in Metro-North fares will also affect certain NJ TRANSIT fares. At some stations on the Main, Bergen County and Pascack Valley lines, NJ TRANSIT fares are influenced by Metro-North fares in New York State. At times when NJ TRANSIT fares would otherwise be higher than Metro-North fares, an automatic agreement is triggered that “holds down” NJ TRANSIT fares, with Metro-North reimbursing NJ TRANSIT for the difference.
This agreement keeps ticket prices consistent with distance traveled, and ensures that revenue is collected by the appropriate railroad.
Currently, fares at selected stations on the Main, Bergen County and Pascack Valley lines are lower than trips of similar distance on other NJ TRANSIT rail lines. For example, a 14-zone monthly pass on the Northeast Corridor/Raritan Valley Line/Morris & Essex Lines/Montclair-Boonton Line costs $393.00, while a 14-zone monthly pass on the Main/Bergen County Line only costs $370.00. Effective with the March 19th increase, a 14-zone monthly pass on the Main/Bergen County Line will cost $376.00, which is still lower than comparable trips on other NJ TRANSIT lines.
On Sunday, March 19, Metro-North fares will increase, automatically triggering an adjustment to NJ TRANSIT fares at stations where a “hold down” has been in effect. The following is a list of affected stations for New York Penn or Hoboken Terminal travel:
Main/Bergen Co. Line: Pascack Valley Line:
Mahwah Park Ridge
Ramsey Rt. 17 Woodcliff Lake
Ramsey Main St. Hillsdale
NOTE: Monthly passes for April will be sold at ticket windows, Quick-Tik, MyTix Mobile Ticketing and ticket vending machines at the new rates beginning March 19th.
At some stations, not all ticket types (e.g. one-way, 10-trip, etc.) are affected. No other NJ TRANSIT fares will change.
