MAHWAH HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION (MHPC)
June 9, 2005 MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at 7:38 p.m.

SUNSHINE STATEMENT: The secretary read the Sunshine Statement.

Minutes:
May 12, 2005 minutes: Mr.Bristow made a motion to accept the minutes as read and Mr. Thornton seconded the motion. The motion was approved.

PUBLIC SESSION:
Mr. Bristow made a motion to open the Public Session and Mr. Cerullo seconded the motion. All approved.

The Public Session was opened at 7:40 p.m.

In the absence of the Chairperson, Mr. Thornton volunteered to chair the meeting.

Mr. Thornton recognized John McCullough, 64 McCaulla Avenue, Morris Town, NJ (973-971-0707 ex 204) Mr. McCullough introduced himself as representing Campgaw Construction , LLC the property owners of 10 Fike Road. Mr. McCullough asked the Commission for restoration guidance and historic information regarding the historic farmhouse on the property. The Commission presented Mr. McCullough with the HPC’s Design Guidelines for the Preservation of Historic Structures booklet for a historic restoration informational source. Mr. Thornton explained to Mr. McCullough that the Commission concerns itself with the outside of the home in keeping the restoration or improvements sympathetic to the existing structure. Mr. Cerullo suggested that Mr. McCullough contact Professional Historic Planner, and author of the booklet, Wayne McCabe & Associates, for additional guidance. Mrs. Greene reported that the Beehive oven in the farmhouse is one of the few remaining ovens of that kind in the County and State. Mr. McCullough reported that the owners are keeping the oven. Mr. McCullough reported that the owners plan to restore and sell the farmhouse. The Commission thanked Mr. McCullough representing the interests of the Campgaw Constructions, LLC to restore the farmhouse and offered there assistance. Mr. McCullough asked the Commission if they would be willing to let the owners examine any pictures or plans of the farmhouse that the Commission may have. Mrs. Greene offered to investigate the archives for additional information.

Mr. Thornton then recognized Clarissa Bruno, 317 Vista View Drive, Mahwah. Ms. Bruno submitted her resume for consideration of the Alternate I vacancy on the HPC. The Commission thanked Ms. Bruno. The secretary will copy her resume to all the members for there review and determination at the July 14, 2005 meeting.

At 8:25 p.m. Mrs. Greene recused herself as a HPC member and as a member of the general public and read a statement concerning the Vista Bahn Phase II project. (see attached)

Mr. Thornton made a motion to close the Public Session and Mr. Bristow seconded the motion.
The motion was approved.

At 8:30 p.m. Mrs. Greene came back to the HPC table as a Commission member.

New Business:

Chair’s Report: None at this time

Legal: No report at this time.

Street Names: Franklin Place to Sustack Place.
Mr. Thornton motioned to keep the street name Franklin Place and Ms. Kennedy seconded the motion. All approved.

Applications:

SMS Developers LLC, Docket 488, (Airmont Road) Major Subdivision/Prel/Final Combined.
Mr. Thornton motioned to accept SMS Developers LLC, Docket 488 with recommendation to the Planning Board that the size, scale and dimension of the new homes be sympathetic to the historic Cragmere homes, Ms. Kennedy seconded the motion. All approved.

Bristow, yes; Thornton, yes; Greene, yes; Kennedy, yes; Cerullo, yes; Mrs. Green, yes.

Bogert Court, Single Family Home Site: Ms. Kennedy motioned to table this application until the July 14, 2005 meeting or the special meeting that may be scheduled regarding Docket 488, and Mrs. Greene seconded the motion. All approved.

Bristow, yes; Thornton, yes; Greene, yes; Kennedy, yes; Cerullo, yes; Mrs. Green, yes.

Vista Bahn Estates, LLC, Docket 461 PhII, Bl 23 Lot 54
Mrs. Greene recused herself from the HPC meeting table. The Commission did not have a quorum to vote on this application. This application will be carried to the July 14, 2005 meeting. The secretary will call Mrs. Drago regarding a special meeting regarding this application and inform the Planning Board that the HPC did not have a quorum for this application.

Mr. Cerullo made a motion to bring Mrs. Greene back to the HPC meeting table and Ms. Kennedy seconded. All approved.

Bristow, yes; Thornton, yes; Greene, yes; Kennedy, yes; Cerullo, yes; Mrs. Green, yes.

Mrs. Greene came back to the HPC table.

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Mr. Bristow suggested that the Commission considered reprinting the Moffatt Road Cemetery Walking Tour brochure. The secretary will check the HPC Trust account for available funds.

Mrs. Greene reported that the Historic Museum Society will be presenting a program on Cragmere in September and invites the Commission to actively participate in this program and a possible walking tour of Cragmere.

Mr. Bristow reported that the last American Chestnut sprout in Mahwah died.

Mr. Thornton motioned to adjourn the meeting and Mrs. Greene seconded the motion. All approved

The MHPC meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
