February 14, 2002 Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m.

*PUBLIC SESSION: Not at this time. Mrs. Shanley made a motion to close the Public Session and Mr. Bristow seconded the motion. Let the minutes reflect that the motion was approved.
MINUTES: Mr. Vasiliadis made the following corrections to the January 10, 2002 minutes: Chair’s report: NJ Register of Historic Places Act, change…But does not regulate private property to: ……(but does not regulate private property); also change: The bill could pit municipalities, who want sites in their communities protected, against…. to: The bill could pit municipalities who want sites in their communities protected against…. Second paragraph under NJ Register take out period after 0 no. Under Demolition Applications: second sentence change applied to apply. Mr. Bristow corrected under adjournment: Marthajean Drago made a motion to adjourn the meeting the Gus…. to: Marthjean Drago made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Gus…… And last sentence: ….which are on file at the Township. To: which are on file at the Township Hall.
Mr. Bristow made a motion to accept the January 10, 2002 minutes as corrected and Barbara Shanley seconded the motion. The motion was approved with a vote of 6 yes and 0 no.
CHAIR’S REPORT: In the Chair’s absence, the secretary reported that Mr. Gioni’s appointment to the MHPC is on tonight’s Council agenda for approval. The secretary also reported that Mrs. Drago spoke with Mr. Nichols regarding his home as the subject for the 2002 Memories of Mahwah ornament. Mrs. Drago suggested to Mr. Nichols, that due to the increase of demolition applications for smaller homes in the Cragmere area, highlighting the Joyce Kilmer home this year would bring the attention of these homes to the residents. Mr. Nichols agreed. Ms. Kennedy made a motion to depict the Joyce Kilmer house on the 2002 Memories of Mahwah ornament, and Thomas Thornton seconded the motion. The motion was approved with a vote of 6 yes and 0 no.

*Prestige Management, Inc., Docket 433, Block 63, Lot 7; Lethbridge Plaza. Let the minutes reflect that after a thorough discussion it was decided that the application had no historic value. Mr. Bristow made a motion to approve Docket #433 and Mr. Vasiliadis seconded the motion. The motion was approved with a vote of 6 yes and 0 no.
*Home Depot, Docket #434, Block 664, 66 Lots 16, 17, 18, 1, 2, 3, 20 & 21. Let the minutes reflect that after a thorough discussion it was decided to table this application until the March 14, 2002 MHPC meeting allowing the Commission to investigate the area.
*DEMOLITION APPLICATIONS: None at this time.
*Isaac Bogert House Restoration: Mrs. Shanley will contact Mr. Boe as to the status of the sub-division regarding the May completion date. The Commission is concerned that if Mr. Boe starts the fifth house prior to the end of the agreement is he responsible to finish the items on the agreement even though completion of the fifth house will not meet the May deadline. Mrs. Shanley will also check with the Township Attorney.
*Historic Property Variance Sub-Committee: No report at this time.
*2001 Ornaments: Mrs. Shanley will collect the money from the sale of the ornaments from Mahwah Sunoco and Fran’s Hallmark for deposit into the MHPC Trust Account by the secretary. Mrs. Shanley reminded the members that she is still storing the 1996 ornaments in her garage and needs to move them. It was suggested that the Museum might be able to take some to sell.
Mr. Vasiliadis made a motion to sell the Mahwah Museum 10 2002 ornaments at $6.00 each to help the Museum with their membership campaign and Mrs. Shanley seconded the motion. Let the minutes reflect that the motion was approved with a vote of 6 yes and 0 no.
*Plaques: No report at this time.
*Quackenbush Barn: No report at this time.
*Mahwah Museum: Mr. Bristow reported that on February 18, 2002 at 8:00 p.m., the Museum will have a presentation on Aviation in Mahwah. A presentation on Victorian Garments will be held on March 18, 2002 as a fundraiser.
*Moffatt Road Cemetery: Mr. Bristow reported that the Moffatt Road Cemetery property belongs to Emmett Moore, who granted the Township an historic easement to the property. The Township appointed the MHPC as overseer for the maintenance of the cemetery. Mr. Bristow reported that the Ramsey Lutheran Church offered to help with a clean up twice a year. Mr. Bristow also reported that the Lutheran Church has contacted PSE&G and has made an informal agreement with PSE&G to drop the dead trees on the property. In anticipation of this work, Mr. Bristow has removed 8 stones for safekeeping. Mr. Bristow reported that the cemetery hill needs preventative maintenance to stop erosion. It was suggested that money be put in the 2003 MHPC budget for this maintenance.
*GENERAL DISCUSSION: Mr. Vasiliadis reported that the Donner House (Fike Hollow, 790 Ramapo Valley Road) has been sold.
Mr. Thornton suggested that the MHPC take photo’s to document the historic Indian site on the Beth Haverim Temple before construction is completed. Mr. Bristow reported that he had already done so. Ms. Kennedy will take photos of the Princess Anne houses on Franklin Turnpike before they are demolished.
BUDGET: No bills were presented.
Mr. Bristow made a motion for adjournment at 8:40 p.m. and Mrs. Shanley seconded the motion. Let the minutes reflect that the motion was approved with a vote of 6 yes and 0 no.
